Objectives
Iowa Medicaid transitioned its Medicaid population to private managed care companies on April 1, 2016. Following the change, drug benefit management, including reimbursement for prescriptions and pharmacist services, is under the purview of the managed care companies. The Iowa Medicaid managed care transition is part of a larger trend affecting pharmacies across the United States. The first study objective is to identify challenges and opportunities for community pharmacies associated with the Iowa transition to Medicaid managed care using a mailed survey. The second objective is to conduct an in-depth case study of the financial impact and other effects of the transition on 3 independent Iowa community pharmacies. The research team has extensive experience conducting research in community pharmacies.
