Objectives |
Pharmacist-prescriber collaboration leads to better patient care and improved patient outcomes. In a pilot study we conducted with 6 prescribers and one community pharmacy in rural Western Pennsylvania, we found that prescription dispensing data organized in an infographic report is effective as a means to initiate a working relationship with prescribers. Our goal is to build upon this pilot work by designing a generalizable, scalable approach for community pharmacists to use their own prescription dispensing information to initiate pharmacist-prescriber collaborations. Our aims are to 1. evaluate prescriber perspectives on how these infographic reports can be utilized to meaningfully support patient care and impact prescriber willingness to engage in collaboration with pharmacists, 2. survey participating pharmacists to determine how this approach has facilitated the initiation of collaborative working relationships with prescribers, and 3. design a toolkit that pharmacists can utilize to develop infographic reports and to train users on how to utilize these reports to engage in collaborations. This mixed-methods study will be conducted in selected urban, suburban, and rural pharmacies who are actively participating in the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Care Network, PPCN. The resulting systematic approach which utilizes dispensing level data available at any community pharmacy in the United States, along with accompanying training and feedback, will enable community pharmacists nationwide to successfully collaborate with prescribers in their region.
