Objectives
This project aims to improve HPV vaccination rates for college-age males and females in Oklahoma, only 10.1% and 41.6% of whom have received the initial dose of vaccine, respectively1. Acknowledging the fact that young adults in college are navigating life with a greater level of independence and often need specific touchpoints in order to initiate health- related behaviors, this effort will expand upon a current initiative involving collaboration between RxSelect CPESN pharmacies located near two Oklahoma universities, the administrator of the insurance program for Oklahoma state employees and their families Employee Group Insurance Division, and the e-Care software provider Prescribe Wellness. The goal is to educate college students on the importance of receiving the HPV vaccine, to direct them to network pharmacies to receive the vaccine series and establish a patient relationship with these pharmacies to address any other wellness or chronic care needs. The funding will allow for this project to target additional sites, involve more local universities, deploy community pharmacists to campuses and student organizations, and produce a greater impact on Oklahomas HPV vaccination rates. Additionally, this funding will facilitate the creation of a guide to assist community pharmacists in identifying, educating, and administering HPV vaccine to college students. Funding will also provide the time and effort necessary to educate and prepare pharmacists for their involvement in local coordination efforts with university staff within Departments of Student Affairs student housing, Greek housing, campus events, health and wellness academic courses, and student organizations.
