Objectives
The objectives of this initiative two-fold. First, our team will comprehensively describe the multi-stakeholder impact of implementing a direct pharmacy-employer contract by a) describing the associated enhanced pharmacy services and pharmacist interventions for the cohort of employees by analyzing pharmacy documentation, b) evaluating patient satisfaction with pharmacy services resulting from the direct contract using a mailed survey, and c) analyzing employer costs and pharmacy revenue before and after the direct contract using pharmacy and employer financial records. The second objective will be to disseminate this experience by creating a toolkit that can be downloaded from the CPF website and a recorded presentation on Towncrest Pharmacys experience with direct contracting. Currently, many employers across the U.S. provide prescription drug insurance coverage to their employees through contracting with pharmacy benefit managers and plan sponsors. With such a model, employers are experiencing increasingly higher costs, their employees are responsible for higher cost-sharing of prescription medications, and reimbursement to the pharmacy is decreasing. Direct contracting between pharmacies and employers offers an attractive alternative that may benefit patients, employers, and pharmacies. Evidence is lacking on the impact of direct pharmacy-employer contracts and there is little publically available guidance for pharmacies, employers, and health benefit consultants interested in pursuing direct contracts. This initiative will address these gaps and provide a framework for more pharmacies to pursue direct contracting.
