Academic Promotion for CPF Vice President – The CPF Board would like to acknowledge and congratulate Linda Garrelts MacLean on her new position as Vice Dean, External Relations at Washington State University College of Pharmacy, after formerly serving as associate dean for advancement. Her contributions to CPF and the profession are impressive and she will continue to cultivate innovation and advancement in pharmacy in this new role.
NCPA Innovation Center for Independent Community Pharmacies Evolve in Value-based Healthcare Environments – On July 19th, the National Community Pharmacy Association (NCPA) announced the creation of the Innovation Center. It is intended to further assist and speed up the evolution of independent community pharmacies in a changing health care environment. The Innovation Center will develop and execute programs that inform and educate community pharmacists to realize the opportunities in an evolving health care market. In addition, it will demonstrate, research and support new and expanded roles for community pharmacists; specifically, this will be accomplished through peer-to-peer exchanges of best practices.
Showcase Community Pharmacy at the APhA Meeting in 2017 – The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting will take place from March 24-27, 2017 in San Francisco, CA. We encourage CPF Grantees and all community-based pharmacy practitioners to share their experiences through active meeting participation. A few opportunities are listed below. There is also an additional 'special call' for pharmacy residents to publish in an upcoming special issue of JAPhA (the official APhA journal).
Innovative Practices in Pharmacy Call for Submissions
APhA will have seven education sessions that showcase multiple pharmacists engaged in activities (e.g., a project, service, or innovation) that advance pharmacy practice. Tentative topic categories include collaboration with members of the health care team; diabetes; immunization; payment for patient care services; preceptors; technology, and transitions of care. View the submission process and note that the deadline has been extended to Thursday, August 25. If you plan to attend the meeting, please consider sharing your experiences in this special session where presenters will provide a brief presentation followed by the opportunity for dialogue.
Contributed Papers Program Call for Abstracts
The APhA Call for Abstracts for the 2017 Annual Meeting & Exposition is open from July 22 through October 5, 2016. Please review the requirements and visit the website to download the call for abstracts.
JAPhA Community-Based Pharmacy Resident Issue
JAPhA is pleased to announce a call for papers for a special inaugural issue showcasing the scholarship of community-based pharmacy residents.
A unique aspect of this call for papers is that authors will be paired with a mentor from the JAPhA Editorial Advisory Board to help develop their writing skills during the peer review process. Topics and projects that were completed during a community pharmacy residency are eligible for submission. Manuscripts must be submitted by September 1, 2016. Authors should follow regular submission guidelines and indicate in the cover letter that the manuscript is in response to the special call for resident projects. Manuscripts will go through the standard editorial team review process.

Korey Kennelty, PharmD, PhD, MS | University of Wisconsin-Madison
Dr. Kennelty, along with her colleagues at University of Wisconsin Health, contributed to a newsletter titled 'How to Avoid Medication Interactions As You Age.' The article is related to her CPF-funded project about medications for older adults. Several general healthcare and medication specific points are addressed. Kennelty suggests, "Use your pharmacist as a resource. And it doesn't have to be a quick conversation at the pickup window. Many community pharmacies offer medication therapy management services, which could include an in-depth medication therapy review to identify any medication-related problems such as therapeutic duplications, potential adverse effects or interactions. This service may be covered by your insurance. Ask your community pharmacist if this is an option."
