Consumerism remains a trend to watch in 2017
As noted in the H2RMinutes Archive from February 15, 2017, in a Health Affairs Blog post, Susan DeVore, president and CEO of Premier, Inc., shares five health trends to watch in 2017. Among them: A renewed focus on consumerism. “Not only is care going beyond the four walls of the provider organization, but so is the entire buying experience,” she says. At the policy level, it could involve laws to protect or empower consumers, who are increasingly becoming the “payer” in health care. “For 2017, clinicians need to [...] start thinking about providing a customer experience that rivals the top consumer brands.” (Health Affairs Blog)

Grantees in the News - recognition and accolades to CPF grantees |
|
Congratulations Grantees!
Olufunmilola Abraham, PhD, BPharm | University of Pittsburgh, School of Pharmacy
'Funmi' was a recent contributor to the Pharmacy Today April Edition regarding her CPF pediatric grant project findings. The number of children diagnosed with chronic conditions has increased over the past 20 years, and approximately 63% of children and adolescents in the United States who have a chronic illness are prescribed medication, although 50% to 88% of children struggle with medication nonadherence.
In Abraham’s opinion, this is all the more reason to have community pharmacists implement medication counseling services for pediatric patients. When pharmacists counsel patients and their caretakers about their medications, one of the most effective tactics is the teach-back method, said Abraham.
“Asking the child and caregiver to repeat the instructions for use, commonly referred to as the teach-back method, could help pharmacists to ensure that children understand how to take their medications,” Abraham told Pharmacy Today.

This grant was recently implemented, so watch for updates and materials in future newsletters and grants quarterly editions.
Lydia's co-investigator and Pharmacy Director, Mike Espel was recently honored with the Cincinnati Business Courier 2017 Health Care Heroes Award for Outreach.
